Convert W7 VHD to WIM

$

hi all.  I have created a w7 ultimate vhd and have booted to it and have customized the system, etc.  I am trying now to use imagex (in the waik x86, thats my system, program group location) to capture the vhd w7 and output it as a wim file.

...PETools\x86>imagex.exe /compress maximum /capture v: c:\install.wim "Windows Ultimate"   where v: is the drive letter assigned after i attach the vhd and c: is the drive location where I want to save the wim (it is my system drive i am currently booted to).  There is 40gb of space on c: and the vhd is 35gb.  It goes through a "folder exluded by default" pass and scans files and directories of v: but then stops with the "error imaging drive [v:\]  the parameter is incorrect" msg.

I have searched for clues but found none.  Any ideas??

cheers

Black screen in Windows Virtual PC - XP Mode

WIN7 64bit Professional
I start:
   Windows Virtual PC

              Windows XP Mode

The program takes a while but the green bar goes across, "Starting the virtual machine",  and a box comes up

It says; "Could not enable integration features". I retry - same results. I "Continue" and get a black screen "Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC" indicating that I have the program running.

Click "Tools". "Enable Integration Features" is grayed out. Click "Settings" - box comes up with lots of choices but they are all grayed out.

Click "Ctrl+Alt+Del" and it suggests "Ctrl+Alt+End" = nothing happens.

Click "Action > Close and the program hibernates, but I never get the green screen saying I am running the program as a desktop.

 What to do?

 Thanks Rusty Nail 2

Windows Update Hangs - 100% CPU svchost

I installed XP Mode on a new ASUS H87M-Plus based computer.  The Windows XP mode VM works and I can get to the internet using IE.  When I run Windows Update it just hangs looking for updates.  Task Manager shows the CPU at 100% in svcHost.  I have automatic updates turned off.  I have reinstalled XP mode 3 times now with the same result.

Update1:  I cleared the event logs and forced the problem to happen.  The event logs were almost empty, just the event I caused when I killed the process.  Process monitor indicates that iexplore.exe is running hard.

Update2: I installed IE 8 and loaded the patches.  No luck, Windows Update still hangs.

Any ideas on how I can get Windows XP updates to install?

Virtual PC XP Mode Mouse Release

Hello,

I am trying to use a program that requires automated use of the mouse in a virutal PC. In VMWare, I am able to release the mouse from the virtual window, minimize the screen, and continue to use the host pc running in the background. I am trying to do this in Windows Virtual PC, XP Mode with my new copy of 7 Ultimate.

I have found people trying to undo this feature by using CTRL+ALT+LEFT ARROW. This does not enable it for me.

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks,

Niki

Add a physical network adapter to a vm under Virtual PC RC running Windows 7 RTM (Resolved)

I am running Windows 7 Enterprise RTM and recently installed Windows Virtual PC RC.  I previously had been using Virtual PC 2007 SP1.  I prefer to setup my vm's using a bridged network connection so they are fully available for system management.  With this installation, I select to edit the vm settings and go to the networking section.  I have 1 adapter selected so I expand the drop-down menu for Adapter 1.  I only see three options:

     Not Connected
     Internal Network
     Shared Networking (NAT)

From the little bit of reading that I have done, the new version of Virtual PC should have an option for Physical Adapter.  I have tried creating new vmcx files for systems as well as importing my old Virtual PC 7 vmc files.  I have also tried updating my physical NIC driver to the latest provided by Intel.  My system specs are a Dell Optiplex 755 with an E6850 processor running at 3.0GHz and 8GB of RAM.  My vm VHD files are located on an external hard drive connected via eSata.  I do run under user-mode rights and have also tried running with administrator rights on the system.

I don't have a Windows 7 RC version available anymore to test this and never tested the new version of Virtual PC until using the Windows 7 RTM version, so I cannot confirm if this worked prior to the RTM build of Windows 7.  Any thoughts or assistance is appreciated.

Edit:   Just to clarify, my host operating system is Windows 7 Enterprise RTM and the guest I am working with right now is Windows XP SP3.

Cannot Install Windows Virtual PC 0x80004005

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me because I am unable to install Windows Virtual PC (KB958559) on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with an i5 750 CPU.

As soon as my PC reboots I get an 0x80004005 error code when Windows Update is nearing completion. I have tried reinstalling the Windows Update Agent without much luck.

Windows Virtual Machine Doesn't Start

I recently installed a clean install of windows 7 pro 64-bit. I installed windows XP mode as described on the microsoft website followed by the update provided but when I try to open windows virtual PC nothing happens. I click on the program icon and nothing happens. When I try to open windows XP mode I get the error message "Cannot start Windows Virtual PC Host Process. Check the System event log for more detials. Server execution failed" Once I check the event log there is nothing there. The PC I am running on supports hardware virtualization and it is enabled in the bios. My coworker just installed windows XP mode on the machine right next to mine and it works fine. Can someone please tell me how to get this thing to work. Running virtual 2007 is not an option.

Windows XP Mode will not run

I have installed Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode following the steps outlined on the Microsoft website.

I enabled hardware virtualization in the BIOS, as requested, and then ran the hardware virtualization detect tool, and this indicated that hardware virtualization was working ok.

When I try to run Windows XP Mode, I get the following error message:

"Cannot start Windows Virtual PC Host Process. Check the system event log for more details

Server execution failed"

The Event Viewer shows the following Errors for Virtual PC:

"One or more files from the Virtual PC installation are missing. Please reinstall Virtual PC and try again."

and

"Virtual machine Error - Server execution failed  (0x80080005)"

I have reinstalled Virtual PC, and I get the same errors.

I looked at Device Manager, and Virtual PC Host Bus Driver has an exlamation mark, indicating there is a problem. The driver properties reports:

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

If I try to update the driver software, it reports that the best driver software is already installed.

I get this same device driver error after uninstalling everything, and then re-installing in the order stipulated on the Microsoft website.

I need to be able to run a Windows XP virtual machine, so please can someone help with this.

Details of my PC are as follows:

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1240 V2 @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz

Installed memory (RAM): 32.0 GB

Motherboard: Asus P8CWS

virtual PC: enable integration features demands domain credentials

$

I've set up a vm and installed Vista.  I've installed the integration components.  When I try to enable integration features, I get prompted to login.  The host PC is on a domain.  The vm is not on the domain, but the only options the login presents is to supply domain credentials.  If I cancel, the integration features remain disabled.  I am trying to share a drive on the host with the guest OS.  Is there a way to solve this without adding the guest to the domain?

FWIW, I have an XP vm (not the XPMode VM but another one I created from scratch) that I was somehow able to manipulate into getting the integration features to work.  To the best of my recollection, after clicking cancel, it would prompt me for a local login.  It would not allow me to log in with the local account until I created a password for it.  After that, I could cancel the prompt for domain credentials, satisfy the prompt for local credentials and the drive I was trying to share would show up in Windows explorer.  This has since stopped working and now behaves identically to the Vista VM (cancelling prompt for domain credentials results in nothing being shared).

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

Stopping time sync with host

I would like to use (explore the features of) my VisualStudio2010CTP, but when I try to use it in Windows 7 Virtual PC the time sync with the host has caused the expiration of the CTP to disable the ability to log in.
In Virtual PC 2007 I could add...
<host_time_sync>
     <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled>
</host_time_sync>

to do this, is there something similar for Windows 7 Virtualization?

Security Issues with XP Mode in Windows 7?

$

I'm purchasing a new system with Windows 7 Professional including "XP Mode."  I realize that Microsoft Extended Support for XP ends in a couple of months, but I still have two security questions about XP Mode:

1) Does the version of XP SP3 that comes with "XP mode" get updated with the latest available updates for XP, either automatically or manually?

2) Are there significant security issues with running this soon-to-be obsolete OS in Windows Virtual PC, or is the rest of the Windows 7 environment protected from any malicious software that might be executed in XP Mode?

Thanks in advance for any guidance. -- JCW 2

Win7 VPC and XP Mode crash upon restart

$

I have Windows 7 Virtual PC (64-bit) with Windows XP Mode in my Win7 Pro x64 host setup.  When I first installed both programs, I had no trouble shutting down or restarting XPM...

...But just recently, after a restart, my VPC crashed.  The sequence is as follows:  After shutting down XPM, the window disappears, to be replaced by the typical scrolling green line with the message "Shutting down the virtual machine..."  The message changes to "Starting the virtual machine..." as it attempts to restart XPM; and just as it is about to open the XPM window, the error pops up,"Windows Virtual PC has stopped working".

At that point, I am obviously forced to shut down the process.  The only way I can start XPM is from a cold start.  I cannot perform a restart of any kind, whether it is a cold restart or a restart following the installation of a program that requires a restart.  I have to shut it down cold before I can start it again.

My first suspicion is that I installed a program that caused one of my Win7 components (whatever is required for VPC and/or XPM to function properly) to malfunction or disappear from my setup.  But I have yet to notice any other program exhibit abnormal functionality or crash completely.  Nor have I tinkered with the registry.

I tried removing VPC and reinstalling, but it still crashes when I attempt to restart XPM.  I have not yet tried removing and reinstalling XPM as of yet, but I suspect that might not work, either.

Is it possible to integrate an existing, up to date, XP Pro OS on my computer into a new install of Win 7?

$

I read that Win 7 security support will last until 2020.I am considering moving from Win XP Pro to Win 7 Pro with XP mode instead of Win 8.1, because the Win 7 upgrade adviser indicates no problems, whereas when I run the Win 8 upgrade adviser there are a lot of incompatibilities.

Is there a way to take advantage of already having XP Pro installed and run it under Win 7 XP mode? Everything Win XP is there on the C: drive already, so it seems a shame to have to install it again and apply all the updates. There is a lot of customization of Win XP that I want to retain, and it would be a major chore to redo it all.... if I could remember what I did. Am I misunderstanding the process of getting from XP to Win 7 XP mode?

Is there any migration software that can integrate an existing Win XP OS with Win 7 XP mode for me?

I would be perfectly happy to keep running XP Pro past the security support termination date if it was safe to do so. I run ESET Smart Security, updated daily. Do you think ESET would provide the on going protection that Microsoft will no longer provide for Win XP?

Install Visual Studion Express 2010 on XP Virtual PC

I'm trying to install Visual Studio Express 2010 on an XP Virtual PC and the install fails after the restart.  I downloaded the stand alone ISO image from Microsoft and mounted it using the Virtual CD ROM Control Panel. The installer worked fine up through the first restart. After the restart, I received an error saying the setup.msi file could not be found.  Looking at the path in the error, there was no setup.msi, but a setup.exe.  Anybody seen this before?  Any tips for this install on a virtual pc? Thanks!

Window Virtual PC-Unexpected Error

$

I've recently installed a collection of VMs available at www.modern.IE site. Tools for Web Developers from Microsoft. I've successfully deployed 3 of 4 VMs. I encountered the following message when trying to open the IE9-Win7 VM:

IE9-Win7 Error - The virtual
machine configuration named 'IE9 - Win7' could not be found. Either the
configuration file (.VMC) file is missing or you do not have sufficient
permissions to access it. (0x80004003)

In reviewing the message references I did not identify an issue with permissions and confirmed the presence of the .VMC file.  I've also tried file download/extract a second time-no change.

I'd greatly appreciate advice/feedback regarding this matter.

Thank you.

Error: A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing

My workstation is Win 7 (x64), I am trying to install Win 7 (x86) in a Virtual PC on the workstation.  The VPC is setup with 2048 MB and I've tried setting the DVD Drive to a local file: en_windows_7_professional_n_x86_dvd_x16-13548.iso and to that same file burned to a DVD-R.

During the install of the Win 7, I get a 'Load Driver' error, text is: "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing.  If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.  Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step."  <Browse> <OK> <Cancel>

Clicking <Browse> brings up Floopy Disk Drive (A:), CD Drive (D:) GRMCNPRFRER_EN_DVD, Boot (X:).  Selecting any one of these and running through all the subdirectories on each one gives this error: "No device drivers were found.  Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK."

I read the post about having both a DVD & image, and I tried swapping the DVD location from local iso file to DVD-R iso file in the Tools | Settings of the VPC window.  But, that didn't do anything but lock up the VPC window.

What should I do now?  Is the iso I downloaded appropriate for a VPC?  If not, which iso should I download so I can create a Win 7 VPC?  I really need to get this going, I've spent the better part of a day and a half on it so far.

Thank you for your time.
