Cannot start Windows Virtual PC Host Process - Server Execution Failed

I have a brand new Toshiba laptop with an i5-4210U processor.  Replaced original HD with a Samsung EVO SSD and a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional 64bit.  Visualization is enabled and verified using the HAV detection  tool referenced at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7.  No AV or security software had been installed yet.

Installed Windows Virtual PC (Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu) without any errors and rebooted.  Then installed Windows XP Mode (WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe) also without any errors.  Attempted to run Windows XP Mode and nothing happened for about 30 seconds then received a popup error message saying "Cannot start Windows Virtual PC Host Process.  Check the System event log for more details     Server execution failed."

Checking the even log only showed one error message, "
The server {9A1774B7-8251-4468-A214-61DCAED9AC2F} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."   That refers to the VirtualPC Class but that's all I can see.

I have tried reloading Windows 7 a few times (with an SSD it doesn't take long) and tried installing the VPC at different stages of driver installation thinking it might be related to that but still no luck.  I have downloaded fresh copies of the VPC and XP MODE each time.

I have tried to run VPC.EXE directly from the SYSTEM32 folder but nothing happens, not even an error message.  If I run VPCSETTINGS.EXE I eventually get an error message (after the 30 second delay) that says the same thing as the other error message from above but instead of saying "Server execution failed" it says "An error occurred while performing the operation.  Error code: 0x80080005".  If I run VPCWIZARD.EXE is says essentially the same thing and gives the same error code.

I had recently set up XP MODE on a new desktop computer for this same customer and everything went along fine.  Now trying to set up their new laptop to do the same thing and it's giving me this grief.  I have read article upon article but either none of them apply or there was no conclusion to the problem given (even though your site says 'answered').

Please point me in a direction.  Why would the VPC Host process not start on a clean Win7 install that meets the necessary requirements and no other software installed?

Thanks in advance.

Window 7 XP mode - XP will not shut down in virtual PC window

I am having a problem with my Virtual PC (Win XP) in Win 7. The problem is that the Win XP in the virtual window will NOT shut down. I have gone to TechNet and read all about the common advice of just changing the shutdown options from "hybernate" to either close or shutdown, and I have tried those and none of them actually allow me to shut down the virtual window and Win XP. I have tried about everything. Ctrl-Alt-Del (on menu bar)doesn't work either. I click it and it looks like it moves but nothing else happens. I did a Windows update and it prompted me with the usual  "do want to shut down now or later" message and I naturally selected shut down there too, but system still will not shut down. Nothing is frozen either. After doing some research I decided to look in the Device Manager and I found yellow question marks next to 5 different "Virtual PC Integration Devices", indicating a possible problem. I looked up another related Technet article that said to right click on each question mark and try to update drivers from the Program Files/Virtual PC folder. I tried that too, but no appropriate files could be found for any of the 5 entries. I also tried the uninstall each item, and a window keeps popping up telling me that I need to restart window, which I agree, of course, but Win Xp still will not shut down or restart. I also tried the option of Disabling Integration Features from the menu bar and still it will not allow me to shut down the Virtual window. I am able to get the Win XP mode to go into hybernation however, but that's it.  I need to be able to shut down completely for a clean reboot so that the updates and other things can refresh. Interestingly, I have not been able to find many people on the net that are having this problem. Any help or comparing of notes would be appreciated.

XP Mode Crashes When Accessing Network Shares

I am using Windows 7 Professional and have installed XP Mode to use a legacy accounting application.

In the Virtual Machines folder on the host under settings I have set the network adapter to Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.

Under XP Mode, I have set XP to be a member of the workgroup and I am logging on with a user who can access network. When I run XP Mode I can access the internet with Internet Explorer.

If I then go to "My Network Places" "View Workgroup Computers" I can see all the workgroup computers on the network. If I then double click on a computer name Windows Explorer shows me all the shared directories on that computer.

This is where the problem occurs. If I then click on a shared directory XP Mode instantly exits and restarts. (Windows 7 is unaffected.)

Does anyone have any idea's as how I can access all the shared directories to view the files stored on the network.

Cannot disable Auto publish

When I first set up the VM (I use Windows 7 as both the guest and the host OS), I disabled Auto publish before installing any stuff on the guest and it worked as it should, i.e. no shortcuts or file associations was created on the host.
But I decided to reinstall the host OS and keep the old .vhd.
After reinstall, I installed Windows Virtual PC and created a new VM using existing .vhd. The auto publish checkbox was checked and grayed out in settings, so I couldn't disable it. I started the VM, shuted it down and only then the checkbox became active and I unchecked it. Shortcuts and file associations weren't created at that moment, but after I launched the VM for the second time and shuted it down, I noticed that shortcuts and file associations were created, even though the Auto publish checkbox was already deselected!
Ok, I thought the problem is that Virtual PC doesn't allow me to uncheck the checkbox before the first launch of the VM and if I could disable auto publish before the first launch of the VM, it wouldn't happen. Then I discovered that VM's settings are stored in the %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines folder and I can just add

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?><!-- Microsoft Virtual Machine Options and Settings --><preferences>
...<ui_options><auto_app_publish type="boolean">false</auto_app_publish></ui_options></preferences>

to disable auto publish. So I reinstalled the host OS again, modified VM's config file, and verified that the auto publish checkbox was really unchecked in VM's settings before the first launch. But it didn't help. After the second launch of the VM, shortcuts and file association was created, as if auto publish was enabled!

Maybe there is a registry setting or some other way to completely disable Auto publish feature?

DVD DOES NOT PLAY - WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER OR VLC PLAYER

I have Windows 8 64-bit OS with latest updates. I tried to play a Zumba fitness DVD, however, it does not play in Windows Media Player or VLC player. I receive an error, Unknown Disk. Other DVDs do play.

I tried to play the DVD in Linux (Videos) and I also received an error, however, I could easily resolve the problem here as it was determined that the disk is protected and I downloaded the fix for Linux.

How do I resolve the problem in Windows?

Kind regards.

Win7 VPC and XP Mode crash upon restart

I have Windows 7 Virtual PC (64-bit) with Windows XP Mode in my Win7 Pro x64 host setup.  When I first installed both programs, I had no trouble shutting down or restarting XPM...

...But just recently, after a restart, my VPC crashed.  The sequence is as follows:  After shutting down XPM, the window disappears, to be replaced by the typical scrolling green line with the message "Shutting down the virtual machine..."  The message changes to "Starting the virtual machine..." as it attempts to restart XPM; and just as it is about to open the XPM window, the error pops up,"Windows Virtual PC has stopped working".

At that point, I am obviously forced to shut down the process.  The only way I can start XPM is from a cold start.  I cannot perform a restart of any kind, whether it is a cold restart or a restart following the installation of a program that requires a restart.  I have to shut it down cold before I can start it again.

My first suspicion is that I installed a program that caused one of my Win7 components (whatever is required for VPC and/or XPM to function properly) to malfunction or disappear from my setup.  But I have yet to notice any other program exhibit abnormal functionality or crash completely.  Nor have I tinkered with the registry.

I tried removing VPC and reinstalling, but it still crashes when I attempt to restart XPM.  I have not yet tried removing and reinstalling XPM as of yet, but I suspect that might not work, either.

Cannot see see host drives, Win 7 guest on Virtual PC Win 7 host

I have Virtual PC running on Windows 7 Enterprise with a Win 7 guest OS and integration features enabled (all drives are selected), as per instructions here:

http : / / technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee449412(v=ws.10).aspx

However after restarting the VM it still does not work, I cannot see the host drives in the VM.  How can I get this to work?

Applications Cut-off in primary window when opened in secondary window and moved.

I have recently put in a secondary monitor to extend the display, the primary display is at 1920x1080 and the new secondary is at 1600x900. Everything seemed fine until I opened an application in the secondary monitor and tried to move it over to the primary. The application is not expanded (it can't be sized) and yet when I move it over to the primary about half way across the primary screen it cuts off. Now I can still move it back, but I can't move it past the point it cuts off. I've tried to reset my settings to with no change. The secondary screen is using an HDMI (as my graphics card only allows one VGA [the primary monitor uses this]) and one HDMI). I'd really appreciate any help!

Also, I'm using Windows7 and an Intel HD Graphics 2000

General Protection Fault in module WIN87EM.DLL while Running Windows XP Mode

0

I am attempting to run a legacy, 16-bit program, P3, on a Windows XP Mode Virtual Machine, hosted by a Windows 7 x64 box. When performing various activities in the program, I receive "P3 caused a General Protection Fault in module WIN87EM.DLL at 0001:02C6." This occurs on multiple platforms (Core i5, Core 2 Duo).

Based on my research, I have found "The Windows 80x87 emulator library,WIN87EM.DLL, works at the 16-bit-Windows level to virtualize the coprocessor among multiple Windows-based applications that run inside the system VM."

It appears to me that, with the Virtual Machine using a Virtualized Processor (not related to the above reference to "virtualized coprocessor") as opposed to an emulated processor, the Virtual Math Coprocessor Device (VMCPD) and/or WIN87EM.DLL generate an error from the virtualized processor (perhaps they do no recognize it?)

In addition "When the kernel loads an application, it checks to see if floating-point hardware is present. If a coprocessor is not present, the kernel uses thefixup records to replace the actual floating-point instructions withInterrupt 3x calls toemulation code in WIN87EM.DLL."

I have found some information that points to "hiding" the math coprocessor from the Virtual Machine, so it doesn't go to the processor. This apparently can be achieved by using a program called WinFloat which includes a tool called HIDE87, which is suppose to hide the math coprocessor from the kernal.

The issue I'm running into is, to properly achieve this, HIDE87 must be loaded before Windows. I have tried a couple techniques, but I think I'm doing it wrong. I have tried adding the HIDE87 program to the System32 directory and then addingHIDE87 (just before autocheck autochk *) to BootExecute under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Managerkey.

For a little more info, when you run HIDE87 from the command prompt it reads "HIDE87: Int 11h hook installed (must reboot to remove)." The documentation says this is what needs to occur before Windows loads. You can find WinFloat here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/97265.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Starting Virtual Machine will not start from hibernate mode.

Hi.  I had a BSOD and upon rebooting my machine one of my virtual machines is stuck in "hibernate" mode and will not boot up.

I attempted to restore to previous versions of the vmc, but that did not work.

The error i receive is.

"Could not enable integration functions"

Retry or Continue.

Selecting "Continue" states "the operation failed.  The virtual machine is not running"

Does anyone have any idea how to get a VPC up and running from this situation?

Thanks, Tim
